Easy, Pourable Icing

This is a neat icing trick that I saw on the side of Duncan Hines cake mix box. It was especially useful for me when I wasn't sure if I had enough icing to frost my bundt cake or you could use this technique for a pound cake. You would use 1/2 cup of icing, any flavor that you are using, and put it into a small saucepan. Heat the icing up to where it will melt into a liquid that you are able to pour over your cake. Or you can just heat the icing in the microwave in its original container for 15 seconds. If the icing has been in the refrigerator, then continue 15 second intervals until it takes a liquid state.

Baker's Beginnings

I love to bake. I feel as it is a therapeutic thing that once processed can turn into something delicious and satisfying. I got my love in baking from my grandma. She was a farmer's housewife and she would normally do everything from scratch if possible. I would sit at the table and watch her dice, mix, roll something tasty into the oven and she would usually include me in it. My favorite smells were the freshly baked biscuits or sweet potato pie that lingered throughout the day after the goodies have been eaten.

So I only bake things here and there when I often get the time to, but really want to do it more often. This will be a blog of baking recipes, baking tips and other baking ideas that I may come across or try out for myself. There may be some cooking recipes and other savory items that I find yummy may as well.

A Family Reunion Cake

WOW!!! I got an order for this cake because the woman tried a piece of the anniversay cake from the previous post and loved the chocolate!!

It was kind of short notice but I said I would do it!!! So it's chocolate with white buttercream. The lettering was made out of fondant. Oh and it's an 18" x 12".

An Anniversary Cake

This was a fun cake to do. The lady that ordered it was so great!! Wish everyone could be as nice as she was. She was the first ever to send me a nice note and thanked me for doing the cake and said how much everyone loved it!!

This cake was for a 50th Wedding Anniversary. It had different flavors for tier and they are all covered with buttercream. Handmade gum paste daisies were placed differently on each cake.

Collin's 5th Birthday

Collin is 5 years old now!!! Whoo Hoo!!! He was a happy little boy for his birthday!! Collin is also so spoiled and he even admits it! He's a funny boy!

Collin ended up having two parties. One for his friends and one for the family. On the 25th, he had his party with his friends. It was only three friends (I think!), but all of the families ended up staying also!! they had a great time running around the house, playing in Collin's room, eating cupcakes, ice cream and cookies (sugar high!) and pulling strings on the pinata.

I just wished others in our family could have made it there with us!! And I wished I had time to go and get Alec for at least the weekend! I just couldn't get away to do it and JoMax and Liz were unable to come.

THE KIDS PARTY

Monkey Cake

I was asked to do a monkey cake for a one year old boy's birthday. Monkeys are harder to mold than you would think, but they turned out very cute and whimsical. This is a chocolate cake with Oreo filling.

Lee Wedding

Last weekend I did this wedding cake. Weddings make me so nervous and stressed. This cake was tough because it was so simple. When there aren't any flowers or other decorations, it's easier to see any flaws in the icing of the cake. This is a two toned buttercream cake, with a ribbon to hide where the colors change from brown to cream.

High School Musical Cake

My oldest daughter just turned 10! She wanted a High School Musical party. We set up each activity as a "class" and had a Pep Rally at the end with the kids performing numbers from the movies. Everything was red and white (East High colors). The cake was white cake with strawberry filling. The stage is a piece of cardboard covered in fondant. All the decorations are fondant also. She and her friends had a great time.

Baby Shower

This is a cake I did for a lady in my ward. It is white cake with strawberry filling. She wanted whipped cream frosting, which I haven't done much of. When I was done, the edge got nicked and the more I tried to fix it the more messed up it got. I had to add more clouds, but it turned out fine.

1st Birthday

This is another version of the Pink Cake Box cake I've done a few times. The bottom layer is white with strawberry filling, the middle is chocolate with Oreo filling, and the top was marble with chocolate filling. The mom was really sweet. She brought hair bows for my girls. Check out her website tutusassy.com.

4th of July.....and Cake!!!

Wow!! I haven't blogged for a while!! It's been really busy lately! But I'll start with our July 4th fun!!

On the 4th we first went to the local parade in Arco. We like to watch the parade from the Butte Middle School lawn, but wouldn't you know...they had the sprinklers on!!! What the heck!!! They know that people sit there for the parade!!!

Anyway, The kids had a great time in the water and running out in the road to snatch up candy from the parade entrants.

"Can we play in the water! Pleeeeeeease!!!!!"

Chasing candy!

Kaitlyn forgot to bring something to hold her candy in and Collin offered some of his candy to her! What a sweet boy!!

Reaping the rewards!

After the parade, we went to Tauna's house for BBQ hamburgers, salads, cake and ice cream.

Kaitlyn asked if she could have a red, white and blue cake this year. I was surprised since she usually didn't want anything patriotic before! So I tried to make it patriotic but different. I have never tried to do a topsy turvy cake, so I thought that this was my chance. Well....It was harder then I thought it was going to be, but I think it's okay for my first one. So this was a learning cake! I was just glad that friends and family don't care if it's a little off! They all liked it!!

Kaitlyn with her birthday cake.

The makings of homemade rootbeer!! The kids had a blast watching the smoke from the dry
ice!!!

With our belly's full and knowing that we would be up late watching fireworks, we went to Kami's to put the kids down for a nap. While the kids were sleeping, Kami, Joe and I watched "27 Dresses". I love that movie!!!

That evening we went to the elemantary school playground to watch the fireworks from the Number Hill in Arco. The kids had a great time playing and running...and running...and running...

Carlee was a little afraid of the fireworks at Kaitlyn's house. Most of the time I held on to her, but she just wanted to run and hide. After all...it was a loooong day!!

King Putt

A boy in our neighborhood was having his birthday party at King Putt. It is an indoor miniature golf course that is in the dark and all lit up with black lights. I tried to use colors that would reflect this. The course is an Egyptian theme, hence the pyramid and the birthday boy requested there be a ball and clubs on the cake.

Baby Shower

This is a cake I did for a baby shower. The baby's room was to be decorated in pink and chocolate brown with baby blocks, so I used that for idea for inspiration.
